Charleston, SC

The Fire Museum in Charleston is worth visiting.  It is full of history, but it also makes learning fire safety interesting for all ages.

We traveled back to the 1670s at Historic Charles Towne Landing, where English settlers first established what would become the Carolina colony.    There is a visitor’s center with a museum,  a history trail with replica 17th century buildings and a trading vessel, a zoo with colonial-era animals, and more.

Staying Grounded on the Move

 

We’ve been packing up and moving every couple of weeks.  This quick pace makes for exciting travel and gives us the opportunity to explore fantastic new sites, but it can become disorienting.  Honestly, I hadn’t any forethought about this potential side-effect of nomadic living.  I was gobbling up new experiences without any cognizance of needing to stay connected along the way.  Who focuses on planting roots while purposely f

Beautiful Savannah, Georgia

Our two weeks spent in Savannah, Georgia flew by!  I quickly fell in love with the historic architecture, art districts, bountiful live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, numerous museums, and the many city parks offering up a contemplative pause.  The city is very pedestrian friendly.  I enjoyed the hours spent walking around downtown, but if exploring the historic district on foot doesn’t appeal to you, the trolley tours are a great option.  

Shingle Creek – Kissimmee

While in Kissimmee, amongst the endless traffic and tourism, I sought out a place of tranquility and nature to keep me grounded.  Both the Shingle Creek Regional Park and the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek offered such an escape from the city’s hectic pace as well as opportunities for education.

What We’ve Been Up To in Florida

 

We’ve been in Florida for nearly two months and I’m just now posting about this leg of our trip.  We’ve been staying at the Sherwood Forest RV Resort in Kissimmee and it is a huge RV park.  If you are looking for a cozy quiet park where you are on a first name basis with the office staff, this is likely not the park for you.  If you want to be very close to theme parks, it will work wonderfully.  Luckily, we met some great people and made new friends during our stay.

Goodbye Gulf Shores, Alabama

Pensacola Naval Base and Lighthouse

If you are near Pensacola, you should make time to visit the National Naval Aviation Museum (the largest in the world).  It is free, but you’ll need your ID to get inside.  You can spend the day viewing the many restored military aircraft, walk down the street of a 1940s town, try out the flight simulators, and more.

Nature Study on the Gulf

The kids and I ventured down to the beach this morning with sketchbooks and pencils for a bit of nature study.  My son drew a clump of seaweed (with a fly on it), my daughter sketched seashells, and I did quick studies of the sea birds.  Keeping a nature study notebook (an idea gleaned from the wisdom of Charlotte Mason) is such a delight.  I love watching my children quietly observe the natural world around them and record their findings in their notebooks.
